Gotland Whisky was formed in 2004 to produce the island's first whisky. The conditions for success were deemed more than favourable. There are three reasons for that: existing premises, a unique organic grain and a special water.
Rome's old sugar mill is where mashing, fermentation, distillation, storage and bottling take place. Over the years, the gigantic premises from the end of the 19th century have been renovated, rebuilt and refurbished to meet the requirements of a modern whisky distillery. Malting and smoking take place in Ronehamn on southern Gotland.
The organic barley grown only on Gotland creates unique opportunities to produce a successful whisky. To ensure long-term production, supplies of the barley have been reserved for the foreseeable future. Our special water, which is drawn directly from the limestone rock, is taken from our own spring.
2012 saw the premiere of the first drops.
The first drops were put into barrels at Christmas that year.
