Gammelstilla Whisky

Gammelstilla Whisky AB was founded in the fall of 2005 after a year of concrete planning.
It all began, however, several years earlier when three of us were colleagues at a small company in Gävle. During various get-togethers, it became clear that we were all interested in and fascinated by this noble beverage, and that all three of us were also interested in starting and running some kind of business together. It wasn’t until August 2004 that these two completely separate topics of discussion came together, and the idea of our own distillery began to take shape.
The scale of the work proved to be extensive at an early stage, and three people would be far too few. We decided to look for other whiskey-loving individuals with different areas of expertise to bring to the company. Our goal was to become a team of ten people. This was achieved after another six months, when we found suitable candidates for partnership.
As the group expanded, we also searched for a location where we could conduct our operations. This type of business has specific requirements, not only for the building and facilities but also for the character of the surroundings, which will be associated with the whiskey. A harmonious landscape with cultural heritage, preferably with a touch of mystery.
And Gammelstilla is certainly a mill with a long history. The brick warehouse on the scenic headland was once intended as a manor house for the mill owner of the time. Adjacent to the mill, just a stone’s throw from the headland, we found what we call the White Warehouse. It is a stone building with the perfect conditions for establishing a whiskey distillery: just the right size, with high ceilings to accommodate the imposing stills, and constructed of non-flammable materials. Moreover, it is incredibly beautiful and serene.
