Göteborgs Nya Bryggeri

Göteborgs Nya Bryggeri first took shape in people’s minds as early as May 9, 2001. That was the day it was decided in Denmark that Pripps in Gothenburg would be shut down. A 173-year-old brewing tradition in the city was consigned to history. Johan Albrecht Pripp would have been just as devastated as the employees at that fine brewery were, had he been alive.
The laid-off employees founded the Prippklubben association in 2002. The goal was to meet and stay in touch as most of them found new jobs at other companies. Three years later, the association developed its own beer, which was enjoyed with great delight at their gatherings.
After the forced name change of the association’s beer, work began on starting a new brewery of their own. The club let the plans sit and mature in their minds for a long time. These were well-considered ideas that eventually took physical form. For several years, the brewery group met regularly to discuss the project. We studied the market and trends and conducted a thorough analysis that resulted in the living document “Business Plan for Göteborgs Nya Bryggeri.”
In April 2008, the Pripp Club formed the support association PrippInvest. The association’s purpose was to support Prippklubben regarding the brewery plans and to help find investors by spreading the word about the excellence of a new brewery on J.A. Pripps Gata. The association’s president, Bill Larsson, took on the task with a serious approach and a determined attitude.
Göteborgs Nya Bryggeri AB was founded in September 2008 by Nina and Marc Rothausen, Martin Lundh, Peter Thulin, and Johan Nydewall. All the founders had once worked at Pripps. With Christian Baarlid as chairman, the group worked tirelessly to find investors and strengthen the project’s brand.
In 2012, Ola Jonsson, a business partner and owner of Grebbestad Bryggeri, became interested in the plans for Göteborgs Nya Bryggeri. After some discussions and planning in 2013, things suddenly moved very quickly when we decided to bring the project to life together. In 2014, the brewhouse premises were renovated, and installation work on the new brewery facility began. Since 2015, we have once again been brewing beer on J.A. Pripps Gata.
