Kyrkeby Bränneri

Kyrkeby Distillery in Vissefjärda is one of Sweden’s most historic distilleries and is considered the country’s oldest still-operating facility of its kind. Located in the scenic Lyckebyån valley, schnapps has been produced here since at least 1771. According to local tradition, King Gustav III himself gave his approval for the continued production of schnapps during a visit that same year. Over the centuries, the operation has grown from a small farm distillery into a culturally and historically significant facility where much of the original equipment from the 19th century still remains.

When Swedish spirits production was centralized in 1971, operations ceased, but thanks to determined restoration efforts by local enthusiasts, the distillery was preserved for the future. Production resumed in 2017, and today potato schnapps is produced using traditional methods with local ingredients and artisanal expertise passed down through generations. Production takes place on a limited scale, with a focus on quality, history, and authentic Småland craftsmanship.

Today, Kyrkeby Bränneri serves both as a living industrial heritage site and as a popular tourist destination. Its product lineup includes Kyrkeby Ettan, Kyrkeby Citron, and Kyrkeby Pors, as well as various seasonal editions inspired by the nature of Småland. Through tours and tastings, visitors gain insight into the Swedish aquavit tradition and the opportunity to experience how spirits were produced long before modern industry took shape.
