The story – the beloved apple
Out on the Skåne plains outside Lund, two entrepreneurs were engaged in a lively discussion about how best to make use of all the apples that kept falling to the ground.
The discussion centered on the world-class windfall fruit that had drawn them to the region after working at Moët & Chandon in California’s Napa Valley wine district. That is where the story of Skånska Spritfabriken begins.
Jam, juice, pick-your-own… Or spirits. Making spirits seemed the most logical choice, as it was a skill they possessed. Bottles, corks, and used oak barrels of various sizes were purchased.
In 2006, the first distillation of apples was carried out, and the spirit was allowed to age on the farm.
The first bottles were filled, and with them in the car, the couple drove to Berlins Krog. The first sale was made. Pommeau, now known as Äppelglöd, and Swedish calvados – Österlen.
To celebrate, they ordered a lavish dinner at another restaurant, significantly more expensive than the sales they had just made.
It turns out that Äppelglöd (Pommes Feliz) and Österlen, a Swedish calvados, taste heavenly.
