Värmdö Bränneri – Apples Are the Foundation
Even when we started Värmdö Musteri in 2008, we were already thinking about the next step: refining the cider we produced from Swedish apples. With the cidery and a great location, all the pieces were in place. When we turned that idea into reality a few years later—in 2012, to be precise—Värmdö Bränneri was founded. With the distillery, our offerings expanded from the cider on the breakfast table through dinner and all the way to the end of the meal.
It’s no secret that we have a passionate interest in French food and beverage culture. Before building the distillery, we read everything we could on the subject and traveled to the parts of France synonymous with apple-based spirits and sparkling wines. We traveled to Normandy and Champagne. Our journeys also took us to other parts of the world, to people and places with expertise in fermenting and distilling fruit and grapes.
We’re in no hurry
Our studies have taught us that quality takes time. If anything sets us apart, it’s that we’re in no hurry. The equipment was purchased without compromise; the distillery houses stainless steel fermentation tanks and a copper still, all acquired with a focus on quality. The oak barrels that Värmdö Bränneri uses for aging come partly from regions of France renowned for their high quality, and partly from unique barrels made in Sweden. In short, we left nothing to chance in the construction of the distillery or in the production process.
Quality takes time, and shortcuts are not for us. On a hillside, a couple of hundred meters from the distillery, we have planted several hundred apple trees. Older varieties coexist with new additions. It will take a few years before the harvest is something to boast about.
Värmdö Bränneri is beautifully situated on Ingarö, a few miles outside Stockholm. It is located right next to Värmdö Musteri in a section specially built for this purpose.
