About the Brewery
The brewery is located in Ljungsbro, just outside Linköping, 800 meters from the ruins of Sweden’s oldest monastery—Vreta Kloster—which was founded in 1101. Within the monastery ruins, archaeologists have discovered what is believed to have been the nuns’ brewery. Here, the nuns brewed, drank, and served beer to the poor.
During the Middle Ages, beer was brewed at monasteries (and on nearly every farm) in those parts of Europe where wine was not produced. This is not surprising, as beer was both nutritious (“liquid bread”) and boiled during production. In other words, beer was safe to drink, unlike water, which was often dirty.
With a fondness for Belgian beer styles and the brewery’s location in the parish of Vreta Kloster, it was only natural that the brewery would feature a nun holding a beer mug on its logo. Especially considering that the close connection between beer and monasteries in Belgium is often illustrated with images of monks or medieval men. It’s simply time for “more nun beer for the people!”
